You can achieve various things with an interior house repainting project. Fresh paint can make rooms look new, invigorate bland decor and visually alter proportions. A professional house painter will do the job efficiently with the least disruption. While you can get expert guidance from them regarding paint and design choices, here are some additional tips.

Accent Walls

Accent walls add visual interest and intrigue and break up the monotony of four uniform walls, especially in a boxy room with no outstanding features. First, you need to choose the surface to highlight. The best one is often a solid wall without windows and doors that otherwise compete for attention. The furniture and room layout is another crucial factor when choosing which wall to accent. Usually, a piece such as a bedhead, artwork, or an open fireplace is set against the feature wall, making a complete statement.

The colour of the accent wall should flatter the whole room as well. Choose a colour repeated elsewhere, such as on a rug, so the accent colour appears to belong. If you're unsure what hue to pick, repeat the other wall colour but go several shades darker.

Altering Room Proportions

The paint colours of a room can alter the sense of space in a room and you can use this to your advantage. Colours can make a room look larger or smaller and change its proportions. To make an area seem bigger, use pale colours and reduce contrast. Light blue or grey walls reflect more light than deep colours, for instance, giving the impression of roominess. If you have a large and cavernous room, you can do the reverse and make it cosy with dark colours that absorb light and appear closer.

Whenever you pit two different colours beside each other, the contrast draws the eye and attracts attention, and this can affect the sense of space. In a compact room, using similar colours for the walls and ceiling will create a flow and minimise the transition between the two surfaces. This can help the area appear bigger as it doesn't draw attention to the room boundaries. On the other hand, a bold contrast can make the small room's proportions more obvious.

In a large room where maximising space isn't a concern, you can create strong contrasts between the walls, ceilings, picture rails and crown mouldings. This detail can prevent the room from seeming cold and bare; bigger spaces can handle visual details without feeling cluttered.
